The legal distribution of SIM cards have began in Rohingya camps across Cox’s Bazar. Interim government took the initiative in a bid to tackle rampant criminal activities taking place in these camps for years, arising from the use of illegally obtained SIM cards.
Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Mizanur Rahman formally inaugurated the initiative at Ukhiya’s camp 18 on Monday morning.
At the event, he handed over designated Teletalk SIM cards to the newly elected president and executive members of the United Council of Rohang (UCR).
Mizanur said illegal SIM use had long facilitated the growth of criminal networks inside the camps, creating a major challenge for law enforcement agencies.
He said, “From now on, only legal SIMs will be permitted. This will play an important role in maintaining law and order and preventing crime.”
He added that alongside implementing this measure, hundreds of thousands of illegal SIMs would soon be deactivated. Blocking illegal SIMs and bringing users under a legal structure would also make it easier to connect with humanitarian assistance activities.
Rohingya (displaced citizens of Myanmar) representatives have also responded positively to the initiative. UCR organiser Master Sayed Ullah said, “With legal SIM cards, communication among our families will become easier.
“Many people were previously deceived while buying illegal SIMs. With authorised SIMs, both security and confidence will increase.”
Earlier, Bangladesh government imposed a ban on illegal SIM use in Rohingya camps in 2019. Despite the restriction, SIM use continued, causing difficulties for law enforcement in verifying identities.
However, officials believe that if the new initiative succeeds, establishing control within the camps will become easier until Rohingya repatriation takes place.
