A Dhaka court has placed Md Shafiq Nazrul on a four-day remand in connection with a fraud case where he allegedly embezzled money by promising guaranteed success in Bar Council examinations through a Facebook page named “Law Doctor”.

Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order on Tuesday after a hearing on an application from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station’s Investigating Officer SI Abdullah Al Mamun.

According to case documents, the case was filed by Khurshid Alam. The accused operated a Facebook page named “Law Doctor” targeting Bar Council examinees with advertisements promising “100 MCQs and guaranteed pass”.

When a businessman examinee contacted him, Shafiq Nazrul introduced himself as being close to influential circles, including the prime minister’s daughter and the attorney general’s family. He promised to help him pass the examination and demanded Tk8 lakh, receiving Tk4.05 lakh through bank and mobile financial service accounts.

However, when the victim failed the Bar Council MCQ examination held on 12 June, the fraud was exposed.

State counsel Harun Or Rashid told the court that the accused has been attempting to malign the Bar Council examination and the government through his activities. Behind his flashy advertisements, there are various irregularities and question paper trading, he said.

With the court’s permission, the accused said, “I am not involved. All allegations are baseless. I provided suggestions before the examination — 100 out of 100 questions were common. I am an expert. Can I not provide suggestions? This is a false case.”

Police said there are allegations that he also extorted substantial amounts from several others using the same tactics. Case documents mention victims including Abul Hashem (Tk3 lakh), Dilruba Akhter Dipa (Tk6 lakh), Mosa. Minto Haque (Tk5.90 lakh), Abdul Awal (Tk8 lakh), and Md Sohag Mollah (Tk4 lakh). Investigations into these allegations are ongoing.

Additionally, the court showed him arrested in another case filed by Bangladesh Bar Council Additional Director Md Al Emran over the dissemination of misleading information about Bar Council examinations through the “Adomma Coaching Center”.

After the hearing, the magistrate partially granted the police application and remanded Shafiq Nazrul for four days. The police argued that thorough interrogation was needed to recover embezzled money, collect transaction records, identify other network members, and uncover the full extent of the fraud.
