Bayern Munich have confirmed that head coach Vincent Kompany is receiving treatment in hospital after he collapsed during a training session on Friday.
The 40-year-old Belgian fell ill while working with Bayern’s reserve team. An emergency medical team took him to hospital, where doctors are carrying out tests.
“Vincent Kompany had to seek medical attention on Friday after collapsing during a training session with FC Bayern’s reserve team,” the club said in a statement.
“Kompany is undergoing thorough examinations at the hospital and will remain under medical care.”
The incident came just days after Kompany revealed that he had been struggling with a virus.
He missed training and a press conference on Tuesday before Bayern’s Champions League match against Arsenal.
Speaking after the match, Kompany admitted that he had ignored signs that his body needed rest.
“I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course I didn’t listen to my body — and then at some point my body just said, ‘enough is enough!'” he said.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said the club would give Kompany all the time he needs to recover.
“We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure he recovers quickly. Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, as well as all the time he needs. His coaching staff, whom we trust completely, will take over his duties,” Eberl said.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks had already taken charge of training and media duties during Kompany’s absence earlier in the week.
Danks said on Tuesday that the Belgian had been suffering from pain in his legs because of the virus.
“It affected his legs at times; he was experiencing some pain. It’s just a virus. He needs rest,” Danks said.
“The most important thing we’re encouraging him to do right now is to rest and take as much time as he needs—no matter how long that may be.”
Kompany took charge of Bayern in 2024 after leaving English club Burnley.
He has enjoyed a successful spell in Germany, leading Bayern to Bundesliga titles in his first two seasons and winning the German Cup in 2026.
Bayern currently lead the Bundesliga table on goal difference after six matches. They are scheduled to face third-placed Freiburg on Saturday.
The club have not announced when Kompany will return to his coaching duties.
