Two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey says he “literally” has no “home” and is living out of a suitcase in various hotels and Airbnbs while working as a lounge singer in Cyprus. The embattled actor, whose Hollywood career has largely collapsed following numerous allegations of sexual misconduct and assault that first emerged in 2017, also expressed his belief that public support from influential filmmakers could help restore his reputation.
In an interview with The Telegraph (UK), Spacey described his financial situation as “not great,” adding, “I’m living in hotels, I’m living in Airbnbs, I’m going where the work is. I literally have no home, that’s what I’m attempting to explain.”
The House of Cards alum, who appeared on Piers Morgan Uncensored last year to discuss his debts, including the repossession of his Baltimore property, said, “The costs over these last seven years have been astronomical. I’ve had very little coming in and everything going out.”
Spacey compared his predicament to the experiences of Hollywood figures blacklisted during the McCarthy era. He referenced Kirk Douglas’ decision to work with screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, who was then blacklisted, as the sort of strategic allyship he believes could help him rebuild his career.
“So my feeling is if Martin Scorsese or Quentin Tarantino call Evan [Lowenstein, Spacey’s manager] tomorrow, it will be over,” he said. “I will be incredibly honoured and delighted when that level of talent picks up the phone. And I believe it’s going to happen,” he told The Telegraph (UK).
Most recently, Spacey wrapped production in the UK on a low-profile sci-fi thriller titled ‘The Tenth Planet’. Having appeared on the festival circuit in both Venice and Cannes, where he was honoured and made similar remarks invoking Trumbo’s name, Spacey has been vocal about seeking a comeback.
Spacey was acquitted two years ago of sexually assaulting four men in the UK and was found not liable in a US civil case brought by actor Anthony Rapp, who alleged that Spacey molested him when he was 14. A number of other men have made similar accusations relating to Spacey’s time in the UK theatre world and on ‘House of Cards’.
‘The American Beauty’ star is now facing a civil suit in the UK from an anonymous complainant alleging sexual assault. News of the case, which is set to go to trial this year, surfaced shortly after the broadcast of a 2024 documentary about Spacey on Channel 4 and Investigation Discovery, which presented further allegations, including from actor Ruari Cannon.
After Guy Pearce remarked earlier this year that Spacey had made him feel “uncomfortable” on the set of 1997’s ‘L.A. Confidential’, Spacey responded by telling the Oscar-nominated actor of ‘The Brutalist’ to “grow up.”
Spacey has previously acknowledged behaving inappropriately at times during his career but denies any illegal conduct. Several figures, including Brian Cox, Liam Neeson and Sharon Stone, have spoken in his defence.
