A Dhaka court has granted a three-day remand for Nazrul Islam Mazumder, former Exim Bank chairman and head of Nassa Group, in a murder case filed with Gulshan Police Station.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the order on Monday after a hearing. Earlier, investigating officer and Gulshan Police Station Sub-Inspector Rezaul Karim produced him before the court and sought a 10-day remand.
According to the remand petition, investigators had learned from reliable sources that the accused was involved in the incident and had provided funds and instigation to others.
Defence lawyers sought cancellation of the remand and applied for bail, arguing that the elderly and ill accused should be spared remand on humanitarian grounds.
Standing in the dock during the hearing, Nazrul Islam displayed his medical documents and said he was seriously unwell, had undergone open-heart surgery and had suffered repeated chest pains in jail.
He said further remand could trigger a heart attack and requested that any questioning be conducted at the jail gate.
Additional Public Prosecutor Mohammad Shamsuddoha Sumon opposed the plea, saying the accused had provided financial support that enabled others to act, adding that remand was essential for proper investigation.
After hearing both sides, the court granted a three-day remand.
According to the case statement, Kamal Hossain, known as Sabuj, 40, joined an anti-discrimination student movement on 19 July last year at Shahjadpur Bhatara Goli under Gulshan Police Station. He was shot dead around 12:30pm that day.
The case was filed on 7 July this year with Gulshan Police Station. Earlier, on the night of 1 October, Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police arrested Nazrul Islam Mazumder from Gulshan. He has remained in jail since then.
