The Michael Jackson biopic ‘Michael’ has made a record-breaking start at the global box office, earning $97 million in North America and $217 million worldwide in its opening weekend.
The Lionsgate production has set a new benchmark for music biopics, surpassing the previous record held by Straight Outta Compton and outperforming early expectations, which had initially projected a more modest debut.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, audiences have responded strongly to the film, giving it an A minus CinemaScore. Viewers were predominantly over 25, with women making up a majority of the audience.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Michael traces the life of Michael Jackson from his early days with the Jackson 5 to his rise as a global pop icon. Jaafar Jackson, the singer’s nephew, makes his acting debut in the title role, alongside Colman Domingo and Nia Long as his parents.
The film has faced criticism for its selective approach to Jackson’s later controversies. Reports suggest that planned material referencing legal allegations was removed during production, resulting in a narrative that concludes in the late 1980s.
With a production budget close to $200 million, the film is one of the most expensive music biopics ever made. It is a joint effort between Lionsgate, Universal and the Michael Jackson estate.
Industry analysts say the strong opening places Michael among Lionsgate’s biggest releases in years, with expectations that its global total could climb significantly in the coming weeks.
