The main structure of Bijoy Chattar, a notable landmark in Jamalpur, is being demolished to make way for a new memorial. The government has decided to construct the July Martyrs Memorial Column at the site in honour of the July Martyrs.

The demolition work began on Tuesday morning, including the removal of Sheikh’s residence on the Jamalpur-Dewanganj bypass road. The project is being carried out under the supervision of the Public Works Department.

Bijoy Chattar, also known as Mirza Azam Square, was constructed in 2023 during the Awami League government’s tenure at a cost of Tk4.90 crore. Despite its recent construction and significance as an important city landmark, it is now being replaced to accommodate the new national memorial.

The decision to build the July Martyrs Memorial Column was finalised on July 3 in a special meeting of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works. The initiative is part of a broader plan to honour the July Martyrs across the country with similar commemorative structures.
