Jamaat-e-Islami has urged the interim government to issue an order for the immediate implementation of July National Charter and to organise a national referendum in November.
The call came from the party’s executive committee meeting held on Tuesday night at its central office. Jamaat also urged the authorities to ensure that the next parliamentary election takes place in February.
The meeting was chaired by Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman and attended by Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar and other members of the central executive committee.
During the meeting, the Jamaat chief shared details of his recent overseas visit, while members discussed the prevailing political situation in the country.
Committee members expressed concern that the government is delaying the process of holding a referendum to give legal status to the July National Charter, calling the situation alarming.
They noted that holding the national election and referendum on the same day would reduce the significance of the referendum and create uncertainty in the process, as any suspension of voting at a polling centre during the national election would also halt the referendum there.
The central executive committee of Jamaat-e-Islami also demanded that the government and the Election Commission install CCTV systems at all polling centres to ensure a free, fair, transparent and credible national election.
