Iran has yet to receive a response from Saudi Arabia or Yemen’s Houthis to its offer to help broker peace talks to end the fighting between them, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has said.
The offer came after the Iran-aligned Houthis escalated their strikes on Saudi Arabia earlier this month, reports Reuters.
In a televised interview broadcast on Iraq’s Al Ekhbariya TV on Tuesday, Araqchi also commented on the possibility of Egypt joining Saudi Arabia’s military campaign against the Houthis.
Warning that “any foreign intervention would complicate matters”, the foreign minister said Cairo had previously informed Tehran that it would “not directly” intervene in the Yemeni conflict.
However, Egypt has said it is ready to provide Saudi Arabia with the support needed to defend its security, a development that could further raise tensions in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, a vote in the Egyptian parliament on a possible military operation by the country’s armed forces against Houthi fighters has been postponed until 26 October.
Egypt’s armed forces are among the largest in the Arab world.
