Chattogram District Superintendent of Police (SP) Masud Alam on Sunday announced a “zero tolerance” policy against terrorism and criminal activities in Raozan, saying a large-scale joint operation involving the Army and intelligence agencies would soon be launched to prevent targeted killings and restore law and order.
The announcement came during an exchange of views with journalists at the SP office, marking his first detailed briefing on the security situation in Raozan since assuming office in Chattogram.
The SP said Raozan has repeatedly surfaced in investigations linked to targeted killings and organised crimes in Chattogram city. According to intelligence reports, criminals often use the area’s hilly terrain as a safe route for movement and hideouts, prompting increased surveillance by law enforcement agencies.
He said several murders occurred in Raozan following the political developments of August 5 last year, creating instability in the upazila. Authorities also suspect the involvement of Raozan-based groups in various criminal activities in the port city.
Masud Alam stressed that no operation would be conducted without proper planning and accurate intelligence.
He said police are currently assessing the area’s geographical and security conditions, particularly the hill and forest regions, to ensure effective action.
“Operations carried out without proper preparation may lead to mistakes,” he told journalists.
The SP confirmed that coordination with the Army and intelligence agencies is already underway and that major steps would be taken shortly. He reiterated that law enforcement agencies would perform their duties professionally and in accordance with the law, without yielding to political or partisan pressure.
“We will not allow terrorist activities to continue under any circumstances,” he said.
During the briefing, the SP also spoke about the situation in Jangal Salimpur, an area once widely described as a “state within a state” due to the dominance of criminal networks.
He said the government and law enforcement agencies are working jointly to restore normalcy there. Combined drives involving the Army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and Police have already been conducted in the area.
Authorities are also planning to establish two police training centres in Jangal Salimpur as part of broader efforts to strengthen law enforcement presence and improve security in the region.
