A member of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army or ARSA, who sustained gunshot wounds during a clash in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, has taken refuge in the Balukhali Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya, Bangladesh, according to security officials at the camp.
The incident occurred on the morning of 14 October, when heavy fighting broke out on the Nikhyongdia-Buchidong border of Myanmar.
Sources confirmed that the ARSA member, identified as Enamul Hasan (26), sought shelter in the camp’s H-4 block after being severely injured, another, Azizul Haque (32), went missing during the escape, reportedly disappearing into the Naf River.
Enamul Hasan was transported to a nearby camp hospital for treatment. Local Rohingya leaders have stated that Enamul is currently being treated in his cell at Camp-12, with enhanced security measures around him.
A law enforcement officer of camp-12, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the matter. “We are aware of the situation. The injured individual is under surveillance, and legal action will be taken if necessary.”
Security officials at the camp indicated that recent clashes between the Arakan Army and ARSA in the Buchidong region have been intense, with initial reports suggesting that Enamul may have been involved in the ongoing conflict.
Experts have raised concerns over the increasing tensions between armed rebel groups, such as ARSA and the Arakan Army, following the 2017 Rohingya genocide. The ongoing clashes in Myanmar have significantly affected the security situation in refugee camps along the Bangladesh border.
The Border Guard Bangladesh has heightened surveillance along the border to prevent armed individuals from crossing into Bangladesh, ensuring that no militant groups infiltrate the refugee camps.
