imo introduced its ‘Time Machine’ feature as a privacy-focused tool that gives users greater control over their chat data by allowing message histories to be deleted at any time, strengthening data security and personal privacy, according to a press release.

Unlike standard messaging applications where users usually have a limited window to delete sent messages, the ‘Time Machine’ feature enables users to erase entire chat histories even if they date back several days or months. The deleted messages are removed from both the sender and recipient sides.

The deletion process applies to full chat histories and gives users control over the entire data lifecycle, allowing them to decide how long shared information should exist.

imo said the feature removes deleted data from all devices logged into a user’s account as well as from cloud storage, ensuring that no residual copies remain.

The feature is designed to address situations where users may want to remove messages written in anger or emotion, helping them clear conversations that are no longer needed while protecting sensitive information.

‘Time Machine’ operates as part of imo’s broader privacy ecosystem, which includes End-to-End Encryption (E2EE) to ensure that no third party can read messages.

Additional safeguards include restrictions on taking screenshots of chats and a ‘Private Chat Mode’ that enables conversations with a higher level of confidentiality.

imo said the ‘Time Machine’ feature does not focus only on message visibility, adding that deleted data does not remain on any server or with any third party in any form, thereby minimising long-term data risk for users.
