An imam has been sentenced to seven years in prison for attempting to rape a young boy inside a mosque in Nagarkanda upazila of Faridpur.
Judge Shamima Parveen of the Women and Children Repression Suppression Tribunal and District and Sessions Judge announced the verdict on Wednesday.
The convict, Hafez Maulana Ali Hossain, was also fined Tk20,000. In default of payment, he must serve an additional six months in jail.
State prosecutor Golam Rabbani Ratan said, “The court has taken a strict stance on crimes such as sexual violence and attempted rape against children. This verdict will play an important role in society.”
According to the case complaint, a man from Nagarkanda enrolled his son in a local madrasa. The child also visited Ali Hossain for religious education.
On the morning of 6 March 2025, when the child went to Ali Hossain’s shop, the imam took him to a nearby mosque through deception and attempted to rape him, the complaint states.
When the child screamed, locals rushed to the scene, caught Ali Hossain, and informed the police.
The child’s father later filed a case at Nagarkanda Police Station. Sub-Inspector Nur Mohammad submitted a charge sheet on October 30, 2025, naming Ali Hossain as the sole accused.
Ali Hossain is a resident of Bara Kamidia village in Saltha upazila of Faridpur. He used to serve as imam of a mosque in a village under Kodalia Shahidnagar Union in Nagarkanda upazila. He also ran a grocery shop in a tin shed adjacent to the mosque.
