Justice Mamunur Rahman of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court has resigned, citing personal reasons, the Supreme Court confirmed on Monday.
The judge submitted his resignation letter to the registrar general on Monday, requesting it be forwarded to the President through the chief justice.
His resignation comes after a prolonged period of medical leave abroad and subsequent disputes over leave extension.
Justice Mamunur Rahman had been on medical leave overseas since 19 July, 2024. After completing one year, he sought an extension, but the Supreme Court administration did not approve the request.
On 25 January, he applied for another month of leave, which was rejected by Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury.
Following the denial, the judge wrote another letter claiming he had 2 years, 7 months and 21 days of accumulated leave pending.
Justice Mamunur Rahman was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court on 23 August, 2004, and was made permanent two years later.
The resignation follows last year’s removal of High Court Division Judge Muhammad Khurshid Alam on 5 November, after he was found unfit to perform his duties.
The President removed him under Article 96(6) of the Constitution, a decision announced in a notification signed by Law Secretary Md Liakat Ali Molla.
The Supreme Judicial Council is currently investigating several other judges.
