ABC has officially ordered a new ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ spinoff series set in Texas, with the medical drama scheduled to premiere during the 2026-2027 broadcast season.
The currently untitled one-hour drama is being developed by Shonda Rhimes and Meg Marinis, who has served as showrunner of Grey’s Anatomy since its 20th season in 2024.
According to the official synopsis, the series will follow “a team at a West Texas rural medical centre, the last chance for care before miles of nowhere”.
Ellen Pompeo, who stars as Meredith Grey in the original series, will executive produce the project alongside longtime Shondaland collaborator Betsy Beers. The series is being produced by 20th Television and Shondaland.
It remains unclear how closely the new drama will connect to Grey’s Anatomy, or whether Meredith Grey or other established characters will appear in the Texas-based storyline.
Marinis said she was excited to expand the long-running franchise.
“I am incredibly excited to expand the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ universe,” she said in a statement. “This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from ‘Grey’s’ for more than two decades, all set in my home state of Texas.”
She added, “I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it.”
The upcoming project will become the fourth spinoff from the Grey’s Anatomy franchise.
The original medical drama recently concluded its 22nd season and previously spawned ‘Private Practice’, which aired from 2007 to 2013, Station 19, which ran from 2018 to 2024, and the short-form digital series ‘Grey’s Anatomy: B-Team’ in 2018.
