Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar has warned that the government would be held responsible if the 11-party alliance’s Dhaka-to-Chattogram long march faces any attack or obstruction.
Speaking at a media briefing in Moghbazar on Monday afternoon, he said the alliance would hold the long march on 5 September with six demands.
The demands include implementing the outcome of the referendum, holding trials for those responsible for the July mass killings, resolving shortages of electricity, oil, gas and fertiliser, controlling rising prices of essential goods, improving law and order, and ending narrow partisan politics.
“Any obstruction, attack, intimidation or attempt at sabotage against our peaceful programme will make the government responsible,” Golam Porwar said.
He urged the government, ruling party leaders and senior officials to facilitate the opposition’s peaceful and constructive political programmes rather than obstruct them.
Golam Porwar also alleged that opposition lawmakers were being subjected to offensive remarks inside and outside parliament and that ruling party activists were attacking opposition MPs.
He warned that any attempt to disrupt the long march would further increase public distrust in the government and raise questions over its commitment to building a “new Bangladesh” in line with the July Charter.
He said preparations for the 5 September programme had already been completed.
