The government has detailed a comprehensive plan to bolster science, technology, and research as part of a broader strategy to cultivate a workforce skilled in technologies required for Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).
According to the latest budget document, the primary focus is on overcoming automation hurdles and seizing opportunities in emerging sectors through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, advanced research, and innovation.
This approach, rooted in the Election Manifesto 2026, seeks to transform the country into a science-centric nation by providing modern, employment-linked education.
Grassroots STEM and market-driven research
The strategy involves taking STEM education to the grassroots level and ensuring research projects are tailored to global market needs to boost commercial viability and employment.
To facilitate this, the government has introduced new frameworks, “Research to Market” (R2M) and “Innovate to Market” (I2M), to provide direct backing for the commercialisation of technological products and innovations.
Frontier technologies and specialised labs
The government intends to build national expertise in several frontier fields, including space research, semiconductor technology, and seismographic studies.
To prepare the youth for future industries, specialised laboratories focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, machine learning, and big data analysis will be established.
Officials believe these facilities will provide students and researchers with the practical skills needed for the rapidly evolving global tech market.
Resource exploration and blue economy
Geological efforts will be intensified to find Rare Earth Elements (REEs) in riverine and coastal island areas. Additionally, the government plans to map offshore wind energy potential through wind flow analysis in shallow coastal waters.
Ongoing environmental and scientific projects include – coral restoration programmes at Saint Martin’s Island, research by the Oceanographic Research Institute to harness opportunities in the Blue Economy.
Science education and public engagement
To inspire scientific curiosity among the youth, Novo Theatres will be set up in Khulna, Chattogram, Sylhet, Barishal, Rangpur, and Mymensingh, while existing sites in Dhaka and Rajshahi will undergo modernisation. Science centres are also planned for every district in phases to expand public engagement.
The Ministry of Science and Technology will continue to host the Bangladesh Innovation Fair to support young entrepreneurs and researchers. Furthermore, the government will maintain grants for research in textiles, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and innovative technologies.
Scientific milestones and healthcare
The budget highlighted significant recent achievements, noting that Bangladeshi experts have successfully sequenced the complete genomes of indigenous Mirakadim cattle, sheep, and ducks.
Meanwhile, the Biotechnology Institute is using genome editing to develop climate-resilient and high-yielding crop varieties.
In the healthcare sector, a programme is underway to provide affordable, technology-based nuclear medicine services.
An Integrated Nuclear Medicine Information System will link 22 nuclear medicine institutes, including the National Institute, via online networking to improve service delivery.
To sustain these advancements, the government will continue providing financial backing to researchers through the Science and Technology Fellowship Trust, aiming to foster world-class research opportunities both domestically and abroad.
