Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar has accused the government of taking the “wrong path” by failing to implement the public mandate given through the referendum.
He said the government had moved away from people’s expectations by pursuing constitutional amendments instead of establishing a legal framework for implementing the July Charter.
Golam Porwar made the remarks as the chief guest at a seminar titled “Spirit of the July Uprising: Recent Realities” at the Khulna Press Club Banquet Hall on Wednesday night. The event was organised by the 11-party alliance in Khulna.
He said the BNP had initially agreed to the process of signing the July Charter after the referendum, forming a Constitutional Reform Council and implementing related measures.
However, he alleged that after assuming power, the party had denied the obligations arising from the President’s order, the referendum and the July Charter.
Describing the move as a “betrayal and duplicity” towards the nation, Golam Porwar warned that the issue would have to be taken back to the people if the July Charter and the referendum verdict were not implemented in parliament.
He said failure to implement the charter could push the country towards conflict.
The Jamaat leader also criticised the government’s decision to form a special committee for constitutional amendments, saying changes made solely through majority power would not represent genuine reform.
He called for fundamental constitutional reforms through consensus among all political parties in parliament to change the existing structure.
The seminar was chaired by Khulna City Jamaat Ameer Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman. District Jamaat Ameer Emran Hussain attended as a special guest, while Professor Mahfuzur Rahman Akhond presented the keynote paper.
Leaders from several political parties, including Khelafat Majlish, Labor Party and National Citizen Party, attended the event.
Speakers at the seminar called on all political groups and citizens to work together to fulfil the aspirations of those who lost their lives and uphold the spirit of the July movement.
