Bangladesh Bank Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman visited Neela Market in Purbachal New Town on Saturday to promote the use of Bangla QR, as the central bank seeks to accelerate digital payments and reduce reliance on cash transactions.
Accompanied by senior Bangladesh Bank officials and representatives from banks and payment service providers, the governor met traders and shoppers, encouraging them to adopt Bangla QR as a secure, fast and convenient payment option for everyday purchases, the central bank said in a press release.
To demonstrate the system, Rahman bought goods from several shops and completed the transactions using Bangla QR, underscoring the ease of making digital payments through the platform.
He said wider adoption of Bangla QR by merchants and consumers would support Bangladesh’s transition towards a more cashless economy and strengthen the country’s digital payment ecosystem.
Bangla QR is the national interoperable QR code standard that enables customers of participating banks and mobile financial service providers to make payments through a single QR code, regardless of the payment service they use.
The central bank has been conducting awareness campaigns across the country to expand acceptance of Bangla QR among businesses and increase the use of digital payments in retail transactions.
