The Cancer Prevention Department of Gonoshasthaya has been awarded the “Yasmin Memorial Award 2025” by the UK-based organisation, Knowledgist Without Borders.
The award was presented in a simple ceremony held Saturday at the head office of the Gonoshasthaya Kendra Trust in Dhanmondi.
The recognition was for the visionary initiatives and relentless efforts of the country’s first cancer prevention department.
Taslim Shakur, founder of Knowledgist Without Borders, handed over the Yasmin Shakur MBE Memorial Award and a cheque for Tk 1 lakh to Shireen Parveen Haque, Chairperson of Gonoshasthaya Janahit Trust, and Professor Dr Habibullah Talukdar Raskin, Coordinator of the Gonoshasthaya Society-Based Cancer Hospital Project. The award is in memory of his late wife, Yasmin Shakur, who passed away from breast cancer.
In line with the unfinished dream of the brave freedom fighter Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, the cancer diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy, and brachytherapy services are being offered at affordable costs for all patients.
Additionally, free screening services for breast, cervical, and oral cancers are already in operation at Unit-1, 14/E, Road-6, Dhanmondi, Dhaka. Similar services will be available at Unit-2, Mirpur 12, starting in October.
Shireen Parveen and Dr. Raskin expressed their gratitude to Yasmin Shakur’s family for the award and financial contribution. They also urged the citizens of Bangladesh to extend their support in realizing Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury’s dream of establishing this cancer hospital.
