David Jaffe, creator of the iconic ‘God of War’ video game franchise, has sharply criticised Amazon Prime Video’s first look at its upcoming live-action adaptation, calling it “dumb” and “terrible.”
The released image showed Kratos (Ryan Hurst) and his son Atreus (Callum Vinson) in a forest, with Kratos overseeing Atreus’ archery practice. Fans quickly noted that the image lacked the intensity and gravitas of the original game and Jaffe agreed.
Speaking on YouTube, he said, “Kratos just looks stupid. This is how you introduce a brand-new character to the world? It looks like God of War: Dumb and Dumber, like a comedy.” He also criticised Hurst’s defence of the image, noting that it was an official release and should accurately represent the series.
The Amazon adaptation will cover the storylines of the two most recent games, following Kratos as he raises his ten-year-old son while navigating Norse mythology. The series has already secured a two-season order, with acclaimed writer and producer Ronald D. Moore at the helm, co-produced alongside Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios and PlayStation Productions.
