Germany retained the men’s hockey World Cup after Michel Struthoff scored the only goal in Sunday’s final against Spain.

Struthoff struck one minute before the end of the third quarter, running across the Spanish goalkeeper before turning the ball into the net. His goal secured Germany’s fourth World Cup title and moved them level with Pakistan for the tournament record.

Germany also relied on goalkeeper Jean-Paul Danneberg to protect their narrow advantage. Danneberg made several important saves and kept out four Spanish penalty corners as Germany’s defence held firm.

Spain pushed for an equaliser but could not break through the German defence during the final quarter.

The victory gave Germany back-to-back World Cup titles after their previous triumph. They now share the record for most men’s hockey World Cup titles with Pakistan, who have also won the tournament four times.

Argentina claimed third place earlier on Sunday after beating co-hosts the Netherlands 2-1 in the bronze medal match.
