Barcelona midfielder Gavi will undergo surgery to treat a persistent meniscus issue in his right knee, the LaLiga champions confirmed on Monday.

The 21-year-old Spain international, who previously tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in November 2023, picked up the latest injury during training in August, shortly after playing in Barcelona’s opening two matches of the season.

Although the club has not provided an official timeline for his recovery, reports in the Spanish media suggest Gavi could be sidelined for five to six weeks.

“Gavi underwent intense sporting stress tests after finishing his conservation course of treatment for the radial injury to the internal meniscus in his right knee,” Barcelona said in a statement.

“The conclusion is that in order to guarantee the best possible recovery and return to competitive action, this Tuesday Gavi will undergo an arthroscopic examination.”

The Catalan club’s midfield has been further weakened by the loss of Fermin Lopez, who suffered a leg muscle injury during the 3–0 victory over Getafe on Sunday. He is expected to be out for three weeks.

Barcelona currently trail LaLiga leaders Real Madrid by two points and face Real Oviedo away on Thursday in their next league fixture.
