Garbage management workers under Dhaka North City Corporation on Sunday staged a protest at the Mirpur-10 roundabout against extortion. During the demonstration, they parked several garbage trucks by the roadside.
Carrying placards, the workers took to the streets around 11am. The placards read “We want dumping sites free of extortion,” “Say no to extortion,” and “Free, free from extortion.”

Police and traffic officials rushed to the spot and spoke with the workers to restore vehicular movement on the road. Later, the protesters marched towards the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Mirpur Zone.
Aminul, a worker who led the protest, told Times of Bangladesh: “A group of people regularly collect Tk 200 to Tk 300 from each city corporation garbage truck. If we refuse to pay, they threaten us with weapons. So we came to the streets to protest against this.”
