The Gabon government has suspended the men’s national football team after a poor exit from AFCON 2025. Star striker Pierre Emerick Aubameyang has been banned from selection. The entire coaching and support staff have also been removed.
Gabon started the tournament with a 1 0 loss to Cameroon. They then lost 3 2 to Mozambique and were knocked out in the group stage. Their campaign ended with another defeat on Wednesday, December 31. Gabon gave away a two goal lead and lost 3 2 to defending champions Cote d’Ivoire. They finished last in Group F.
The government reacted strongly to the results. Sports Minister Simplice Desire Mamboula addressed the nation on television. He called the team’s display dishonourable and announced strict action.
Such government steps can lead to problems under FIFA rules. FIFA does not allow state interference in football bodies. Gabon’s football federation FEGAFOOT could now face sanctions.
Aubameyang has enjoyed a long career with the national team. He has scored 41 goals in 84 matches for Gabon. His last goal came in the defeat to Mozambique. That strike took him into the AFCON record books.
Gabon went two goals down in that match. Aubameyang scored in first half stoppage time. At 39, he became the second oldest scorer in AFCON history. Only Egypt’s Hossam Hassan is older.
Mozambique scored again early in the second half to regain their lead. Gabon replied through Alex Moucketou Moussounda. The goal was not enough to change the result. Gabon lost again and exited the tournament early.
Aubameyang suffered a thigh injury in the Mozambique match. He returned to France after that game. Developments on Wednesday suggest his international career may now be over.
