A vessel named MV Evita, carrying 56,890 tonnes of wheat from the United States, has arrived at the outer anchorage of Chattogram port, according to the food ministry.
The wheat was imported under a cash purchase contract in line with the memorandum of understanding signed between the governments of Bangladesh and the US, the ministry said in a press release on Sunday.
Bangladesh has begun importing wheat from the US on a government-to-government (G2G) basis. Under the arrangement, a total of 220,000 tonnes of wheat will be imported, of which the first consignment of 56,890 tonnes has arrived through the MV Evita shipment.
Of the total consignment, 34,134 tonnes will be unloaded at Chattogram port, while the remaining 22,756 tonnes will be unloaded at Mongla port.
Under the earlier G2G-1 agreement, a total of 220,000 tonnes of wheat was imported.
The process of testing samples of the wheat stored on the vessel has begun, and necessary measures will be taken to unload the consignment promptly after the completion of testing.
