Chief metropolitan magistrate court has sent freedom fighter and former Professor Anwara Begum Anu of the Political Science Department at Jagannath University (JnU) to prison.
Investigation officer of Sutrapur thana AKM Hasan Mahmudul Kabir applied to the court to keep Prof. Anwara in prison. Her lawyer Obaidul Islam applied for bail but state lawyers opposed the bail prayers. Metropolitan magistrate Mustafizur Rahman rejected the bail prayers and sent her to prison.
Police have arrested Professor Anwara Begum Anu on Wednesday evening. The arrest took place around 7:30 pm on Wednesday (May 28) in front of the university, after students handed her over to police. The arrest sparked serious protests on social media.
Anwara Begum is an accused in a case filed by Sujan Molla, former general secretary of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) JnU unit, in February this year.
Sutrapur thana OC Saiful Islam said “Students detained her in front of the campus and informed us. Police then went to the scene and brought her to the police station. She is an accused in a case filed in February. ”
Anwara Begum is also a former member of the constitutional body, the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC). She currently serves as a nominee on Jagannath University’s Upgradation Board. She stated that the university registrar’s office had summoned her to campus through an official letter.
