A Dhaka court has granted a three-day remand of Lt Gen (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, former Director General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), in connection with the murder of Delwar Hossain in Mirpur.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Siddiq Azad passed the order after a hearing on Monday.
Mamun was produced before the court following the conclusion of his six-day remand. Kafil Uddin, investigation officer of the case and also sub-inspector of Detective Branch (DB) Police, prayed for a fresh four-day remand.
Public Prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Suman and Jamal Uddin Marjin supported the petition, while defence lawyer Morshed Hossain Shahin opposed it and appealed for bail.
During the hearing, the prosecution claimed Mamun was a highly influential figure who carried out unlawful acts to satisfy former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
They alleged he ordered gunfire on student activists during the anti-discrimination student movement in 2024. The remand, they said, was essential to obtain further information.
The defence argued that Mamun had already served 11 days of remand and described any further detention as unjustified.
After hearing from both sides, the court approved a three-day remand.
Mamun was first arrested from his Mirpur DOHS residence in the early hours of 25 March. The court granted him a five-day remand on 26 March, followed by a six-day remand on 30 March.
The case filed on 19 July 2024 stated that Delwar Hossain, 40, was shot during the July uprising in front of a fruit market in Mirpur-10. The victim was first taken to the National Heart Institute and later to a private hospital in Shyamoli, where he succumbed to his injuries on 21 July.
His wife Liza Akter filed the case at Mirpur Model Police Station on 6 July 2025.
Mamun served as director of the Counter-Intelligence Bureau of DGFI during the 2007–08 caretaker government. He later became DGFI Director General, holding the post from 2011 to 2013.
