Former Australia all-rounder Moises Henriques will captain Portugal in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Sub-Regional Qualifier C in Finland, as the side begins its campaign to reach the 2028 tournament.
Henriques, who represented Australia in four Tests, 16 ODIs and 11 T20Is, was born in Funchal, Madeira. He retired from Australian domestic cricket in 2025 and has since been involved in Portuguese cricket.
The 39-year-old will lead Portugal in a 14-man squad for the qualifier, which will be played from August 14 to 21.
Portugal are among 10 teams competing in the Finland event, with the sides divided into two groups. They will face Israel, Germany, Greece and Czechia in Group B.
The two group winners will advance to the final, with the tournament winner moving into the next stage of the European qualification pathway.
According to the ICC’s revised qualification structure, the winner of the Finland qualifier will advance to the 2027 Europe Qualifier. The European pathway will eventually determine two teams for the global qualifier for the 2028 T20 World Cup, which will be hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
Henriques played his last international match for Australia in 2021, when he featured in a T20I against Bangladesh. He finished his international career with 1,119 runs and 21 wickets across the three formats.
His involvement is another notable addition to Portugal’s bid to progress through the ICC qualification pathway. The team will now look to make the most of his international experience as they compete for a place in the next stage.
