The Flintstones is heading back to the big screen, with Warner Bros. developing a new live-action feature based on the classic animated franchise, states The Hollywood Reporter.

Actor Ryan Gosling and producer Jessie Henderson are attached to produce the project through their Open Invite banner, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The film remains in the early stages of development and is currently looking for a screenwriter.

While plot details have not yet been revealed, the story is expected to focus on Bamm-Bamm Rubble, the son of Fred Flintstone’s best friend, Barney Rubble.

The original The Flintstones debuted on ABC in 1960.

Produced by Hanna-Barbera, the animated series ran for six seasons and followed Fred and Wilma Flintstone, their pet dinosaur Dino, and their neighbours and best friends Barney and Betty Rubble in the prehistoric town of Bedrock.

The franchise was previously adapted into a live-action film in 1994, with John Goodman playing Fred Flintstone and Rick Moranis as Barney Rubble.

Steven Spielberg served as executive producer. The film was a commercial success, earning $340 million worldwide.

A prequel, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, followed in 2000, but Goodman, Moranis and the original cast did not return.

The franchise has also seen attempts to return to television.

In 2021, Fox announced Bedrock, an animated sequel series set 20 years after the original series.

Elizabeth Banks was attached to voice Pebbles Flintstone, but the project was later scrapped.

Gosling’s involvement marks another major move for the beloved franchise, although it remains unclear whether he will also appear on screen.

With the project still searching for a writer, further details about the cast, director and release date are yet to be announced.

Deadline was first to report Warner Bros.’ plans for the new live-action film.
