Five people, including a pregnant woman and a child, were killed and at least 20 others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a motorcycle on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway in Gopalganj on Thursday afternoon.
The accident took place in the Bedgram area of the town. A Dhaka-bound motorcycle coming from the opposite direction crashed into a Pirojpur-bound bus of Dola Paribahan. Witnesses said the motorcycle was moving recklessly.
The impact caused the bus to overturn on the road and left the motorcycle completely mangled.
Four people, including two motorcycle riders, died on the spot. Fire Service and police personnel, with the assistance of locals, rescued the injured and transported them to Gopalganj Medical College Hospital and General Hospital, where a 12-year-old child was declared dead.
According to the police, the deceased include three men, one pregnant woman, and one child. As of the latest reports, the police have not yet been able to identify the victims.
Following the tragic incident, KM Babar, Member of Parliament for the Gopalganj-2 constituency, Md Arif Uz Zaman, Deputy Commissioner, and Habibullah, Superintendent of Police, visited the scene of the accident.
