A fire broke out at Sadek Khan Krishi Market in Rayerbazar in the capital late Tuesday night.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control within an hour.
No casualties were reported immediately.
Locals said the market stores agricultural products. The fire started around 3am and spread quickly within a short time.
They alleged that fire service personnel took time to arrive at the scene. The blaze damaged agricultural goods belonging to traders. However, they said the losses could have been far worse without the intervention of firefighters.
The Fire Service official said two units worked for about an hour to bring the fire under control.
Efforts to fully extinguish the blaze were ongoing.
Officials added that crowds of onlookers made firefighting efforts more difficult.
