A 20-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death by his father during a family dispute in the capital’s Hazaribagh area on Saturday night.
The deceased was identified as Rahabul Islam Russel, a resident of the Jhaufar area of Hazaribagh. Locals rushed him to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead around 11:30 pm.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, confirmed that Russel’s body has been kept in the hospital morgue and the local police station has been notified.
According to family members, Russel and his father, Jewel Rana, both worked at separate hotels and lived together in a rented apartment. Frequent disputes reportedly arose over personal matters, particularly surrounding plans to go abroad.
Russel’s maternal uncle, Humayun, said both Russel and his father had intentions of going overseas and often clashed over who would be sponsored first by Russel’s mother, who currently lives in Jordan along with his aunt. Russel had recently received his passport, which may have further fueled the tension.
On Saturday night, a heated argument reportedly broke out between the two, during which Jewel Rana allegedly stabbed his son in the chest in a fit of rage. Locals initially took Russel to a nearby private hospital, from where he was referred to DMCH. Family members arrived shortly after and were informed of his death upon arrival.
Russel was the second of three brothers and originally hailed from Rangpur district.
Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
