Speakers at a seminar have stressed the need for a comprehensive strategy to maximize the benefits of the Bangladesh-US tariff deal.
The event, organised by the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) at its auditorium in Dhaka, highlighted that the deal’s reduction of the US reciprocal tariff from 35 percent to 20 percent could boost Bangladesh’s export competitiveness.
Dr Anisuzzaman Chowdhury, special assistant to the chief adviser, was the chief guest, while Mahbubur Rahman, commerce secretary, joined as special guest. Dr Mahfuz Kabir, research director of BIISS, Dr Golam Rasul, a professor of IUBAT, and Inamul Haq Khan, senior vice president of the BGMEA, highlighted the implications of the tariff deal for Bangladesh’s export competitiveness.
The US remains a key export market, particularly for garments, and the tariff deal could further expand trade if strategically utilized.
However, the speakers cautioned that the evolving global tariff environment requires immediate policy action to fully benefit from the deal.
