A court has granted bail to Abdur Razzak Bin Solaiman Riad, a former leader of the Students Against Discrimination movement, in an attempted murder case.

On Monday, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Aulad Hossain Muhammad Zonaid of Dhaka granted him bail until 12 April after concluding the hearing. SI Moktar Hossain of the Prosecution Division confirmed the matter. The court accepted a surety bond of Tk500 from him.

On 26 February, Nirjon Sardar Badhon, a student of Presidency University, filed an attempted murder case with Gulshan Thana, naming Riad and 11 others. An additional 10-22 unidentified individuals were also made accused in the case.

On the same day, Riad, along with Md Riadul Howlader, Md Alif Ahmed Ashik, and Sayem Sikder – from the same university – were sent to jail. Later, on 5 March, following a police application, the court granted two days’ remand for Riad. However, the remand and bail applications of the other three accused were rejected.

After the remand period ended on 13 March, Riad was sent back to jail until Monday, when he was granted bail.

The case statement alleges that there was previous enmity between the accused and Nirjon and his friends. When they met in room number 412 on the fourth floor of Presidency University around 3:30pm on 26 February, the accused asked him to participate in the convocation.

When he went to consult with the university Proctor Anisur Rahman about the matter, Riadul and Sayem, on Razzak’s orders, attacked him with chairs, injuring his back and chest.

The FIR further states that Razzak attacked Nirjon’s face with a switchgear knife with the intention of killing him. He was also beaten indiscriminately, causing severe injuries. When Nirjon’s friends and university teachers intervened, the accused threatened them. Subsequently, Gulshan Thana police arrived at the scene and they were detained.

On 26 July last year, Riad was arrested in a case filed over demanding extortion at the residence of former MP Shammi Ahmed in Gulshan. After being released on bail in that case, he has now become implicated in this attempted murder case.
