The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has ordered to send former deputy inspector general (DIG) Abdul Jalil Mondal to jail after he was shown arrested in connection with the Shapla Square incident in Motijheel, Dhaka, in 2013.
The case involves mass killings, torture, and other crimes against humanity during a Hefazat-e-Islam rally.
The tribunal issued the order on Tuesday after Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam appeared on behalf of the prosecution and applied to have former DIG Abdul Jalil Mondal shown arrested. Following the hearing, the court approved the request and ordered him sent to jail.
Speaking to journalists after the hearing, the chief prosecutor said the investigation into the Motijheel Shapla Square incident is in its final stages, and the report is expected to be submitted soon.
The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Abdul Jalil from the Sabujbagh area on Monday.
On 5 May, 2013, during the Hefazat-e-Islam gathering at Shapla Square, he was serving as Additional Commissioner of DMP. He has also held the post of Additional Director General at the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
The tribunal has scheduled 5 April for submission of the investigation report in the case, following a previous order issued on 5 February.
Currently, five other accused remain in custody, including former state minister of Home Affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku, former army officer Major General Ziaul Ahsan, former inspector general of police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque, former deputy inspector general (DIG) Molla Nazrul Islam, and Shahriar Kabir, chairman of the advisory committee of the 1971 Jihadist Extermination Committee.
The chief prosecutor said the allegations stemmed from complaints filed by Hefazat-e-Islam leader Azizul Haque on behalf of Hefazat leaders Junaid Al Habib and Maulana Mamunul Haque.
A total of 21 individuals have been named as accused in the case.
