A Dhaka court has shown former vice president of the now-banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Moshiur Rahman arrested in connection with the murder of Md Sakil in Mirpur.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam issued the order on Tuesday and directed that Moshiur be sent to jail.
Moshiur was produced before the court, where Sub-Inspector Kabir Hossain of Mirpur Model Police Station applied to have him shown arrested.
The application stated that, based on confidential information, Moshiur is suspected to have been involved in the murder.
As he is already in custody for another murder case, the court’s intervention was considered necessary for further investigation. Following the hearing, the court approved the request.
According to the case record, on 4 August, 2024, Md Sakil left his home to join a peaceful student and public protest at Golchattar in Mirpur-10.
Between 12:30pm and 1pm, around 300 armed unidentified individuals opened fire on protesters near the road opposite Adarsha High School, leaving Sakil critically wounded.
He was first admitted to Islami Bank Hospital, then transferred to Kurmitola General Hospital, and finally to the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Agargaon.
Despite treatment, Sakil was pronounced dead on 7 August at 3pm. His body was later sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College for post-mortem, but procedural issues prevented its completion.
After paying respects at the central Shaheed Minar, his body was taken to Bhola and buried in the family graveyard on the night of 9 August.
