The European Union (EU) is expected to send around 175 to 200 observers to Bangladesh in phases for the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
Election Commission (EC) Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed shared the information with reporters at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Wednesday.
The EC senior secretary said EU will send the observers in phases and a tripartite agreement has been signed among the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Election Commission, and the EU to ensure observers receive all necessary facilities, including travel, movement, and logistics.
Akhtar Ahmed said observers will follow local protocols, particularly in sensitive areas such as Chattogram, and will bring equipment and accessories that they will take back after completing their duties.
Observers are expected to comply with the established foreign observer guidelines. He also noted that Turkey has expressed interest in sending observers.
On candidate security, the Home Affairs Adviser said candidates would be granted firearm licenses to ensure their protection during the election.
Responding to questions, EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said the measure does not conflict with the election code of conduct and emphasised that ensuring security remains a priority. He added that minor amendments to the code of conduct could be made if necessary.
Regarding the deposit of licensed firearms before the election, he said the process would be arranged at the appropriate time before voting. The EC senior secretary said they will take the point into consideration and share it with the Election Commission.
