A coordinated market monitoring drive is underway across the country to keep essential commodity prices within affordable limits for low and middle-income consumers, Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir told parliament on Thursday.
The minister was responding to a written question from Mymensingh-4 MP Abu Wahab Akand Wahid about whether the government had any new plan to ensure affordability of essential goods.
Muktadir said the government was conducting various activities to keep prices affordable and prevent adulterated, fake and substandard products from being marketed.
The National Consumer Rights Protection Department, BSTI, district administrations and law enforcement agencies are conducting regular market monitoring and mobile court operations in coordination with the Commerce Ministry, he said.
Reports on market monitoring and actions against dishonest businesses are regularly reviewed. Complaints of price manipulation or unfair practices are coordinated with district and upazila committees and local administrations for legal action, the minister said.
Market monitoring will continue in the public interest, he assured parliament.
