Educational institutions across Bangladesh, from primary schools to higher secondary colleges, are set to reopen on Sunday following a nearly 40-day closure for Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr.
According to the revised academic calendar, the vacation started on 19 February and continued until 26 March but classes will resume on 29 March, after the weekly Friday and Saturday holidays.
English-medium schools remained closed for the entire period of the government-declared holidays, following a decision by the Ministry of Education on 8 March.
The policy, aimed at addressing challenges faced by city residents-particularly in Dhaka and other major urban areas-was finalised during a meeting on English-medium schools and coaching centres at the Secondary and Higher Education Division, chaired by Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon.
Officials noted that during the closure, institutions were permitted to conduct only mandatory examinations according to previously scheduled dates, while coaching centres-both Bangla- and English-medium-remained fully suspended.
Universities across the country are also set to resume academic activities from Sunday. Authorities had earlier suspended classes and examinations at public and private universities from 9 March to 28 March to conserve electricity amid the ongoing global situation triggered by the Middle East crisis, which also prompted the early start of Eid holidays.
To make up for learning losses during the prolonged break, government primary schools will hold classes on the next 10 Saturdays, which are normally weekly holidays, including Saturday, April 4.
