The newly elected leaders of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) paid their respects to those who sacrificed their lives during the 1971 Liberation War and the July 1971 student movement at the Rayerbazar Graveyard in Dhaka on Thursday morning.
Leaders from the unified student coalition, backed by Islami Chhatra Shibir, visited the site to honor the martyrs. Following the visit, a special prayer ceremony was held in their memory.
DUCSU Vice President Sadik Kayem emphasized the commitment to fulfilling their duties by considering the opinions of students and evaluating all election manifestos.
General Secretary S M Farhad said, “We want to honor the sacrifices of the martyrs through our work. True respect can only be shown by realizing their ideals.” He also expressed concerns over the Indian media’s portrayal of the hijab issue, accusing certain outlets of spreading false information to push their own agendas.
The newly elected panel leaders vowed to guide their activities by the ideals and aspirations of the martyrs. They pledged to build an inclusive Dhaka University, working toward realizing the dreams of those who gave their lives in the 1971 Liberation War and the July 1971 student movement.
The DUCSU election, held on Tuesday, saw the unified student coalition secure 23 out of 28 positions. A total of 471 candidates contested for the 28 DUCSU positions, while 234 posts were up for election across 18 hall councils. Voting took place at 810 booths, with 39,874 eligible students.
