Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Abdus Salam on Tuesday highlighted the successful results of mosquito control chemicals liquid malathion and temephos—based on tests by the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) and the Department of Agricultural Extension.
He made the remarks while inaugurating a special training programme for mosquito supervisors and field workers at the Nagar Bhaban auditorium. The training aims to enhance mosquito control efforts and ensure the proper application of insecticides at the field level.
“To ensure the chemicals’ effectiveness benefits city residents, it is crucial to apply them correctly in the field. This training programme has been organized with that objective,” Abdus Salam stated.
He also stressed that mosquito control, particularly targeting Aedes mosquitoes, remains a top priority for the city corporation. “We must use the knowledge gained from this training with responsibility and commitment to achieve success through collective efforts,” he added.
DSCC officials noted that regular mosquito control activities are conducted daily, with larviciding taking place from 9am to 1pm and adulticiding from 4:00 pm until sunset. Special emphasis is placed on coordinated operations in high-risk areas.
The training sessions are led by DSCC’s Chief Health Officer, Deputy Chief Health Officer, and assistant health officers from various regions, along with representatives from the Directorate General of Health Services.
The programme also covers raising public awareness and ensuring the safety of mosquito control workers. A total of 1,050 mosquito supervisors and workers from 10 DSCC regions are participating in the training, which will be conducted in five batches.
The sessions include practical training on mosquito life cycles, species identification, prevention of mosquito-borne diseases, safe use of insecticides, and operation of modern equipment.
DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md Zahirul Islam and Secretary Mohammad Nasim Ahmed were also present at the event.
