Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Minister Professor Abu Zafar Md Zahid Hossain has called on doctors to embrace a service-oriented mindset in providing medical care to the people.
Addressing the concluding session of the first International Heart Failure Conference in Dhaka on Monday, the minister emphasised that physicians have a duty to serve the nation.
“We have a responsibility towards the people of the country. Doctors should come forward with a spirit of service,” he said.
The conference, titled Bridge the gap between Drugs, Devices and Surgery in Heart Failure, was jointly organised by the Heart Failure Division of Bangladesh Medical University and the Bangladesh Cardiac Society at a city hotel.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain attended as the special guest, while Professor Dr Md Shafiuddin, convener of the Bangladesh Cardiac Society, presided over the event.
Professor Zahid Hossain highlighted the history of cardiac care in Bangladesh, noting that the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) was initially established under the leadership of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman.
“It has since evolved into a full-fledged institute and remains a leading specialised hospital for heart disease treatment,” he said.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to healthcare, he said policies should ensure that medical services reach all levels of society.
“Our healthcare structure for preventing and treating both communicable and non-communicable diseases, including heart disease, must be more effective, integrated and people-oriented,” he added.
Speaking as the special guest, Minister Sakhawat Husain stressed the need for collaboration between doctors, pharmaceutical companies and the government to strengthen public health services.
He praised the medical profession as a noble one, noting that its significance grants doctors a unique position in society.
“Doctors must stand by patients with humanity and provide quality services,” he said, urging the medical community to actively contribute to the development of Bangladesh’s health sector.
