Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan has stated that canals which have become blocked and filled will be rapidly excavated and cleaned to control the impact of waterlogging and dengue in the upcoming monsoon season.
He made this announcement after inspecting the Paris Canal in the Mirpur area on Monday morning.
The administrator said that water flow will be normalised through planned canal excavation. Additionally, there are plans to construct walkways along both banks of the canals gradually, ensuring environmental preservation and convenience for citizens simultaneously.
He further stated, “Constructive criticism and suggestions from journalists and the general public will play a supportive role in accelerating our work.”
Responding to a question from journalists present, the administrator said that discussions with various stakeholders will be held to recover canals that have long been encroached upon, and the canals will be freed from encroachment through legal action if necessary.
During the inspection, Youth and Sports State Minister Md Aminul Haque said, “Whenever it rains, the people of this area suffer tremendously. If the canals are properly cleaned and the necessary depth is maintained, the problem of waterlogging will be largely reduced.”
Also present at that time were DNCC Chief Executive Officer Muhammad Asaduzzaman, Chief Waste Management Officer Mohammad Humayun Kabir, and officials from other concerned departments.
