The Department of Livestock Services (DLS) is establishing a comprehensive information-based network to modernise the country’s livestock sector under the Livestock and Dairy Development Project (LDDP).
Jointly funded by the Government of Bangladesh and the World Bank, the initiative aims to create a streamlined database for better management and monitoring of livestock resources.
As part of the ongoing activities, a consultative service programme was held at a hotel in the capital on Saturday to determine the prerequisites for establishing the ‘Bangladesh Integrated Network for Livestock Information’.
The Director General of the DLS attended the event as the chief guest, while the Director (Administration) of the department presided over the session.
According to project officials, the implementation of this programme began in January 2024 and is scheduled for completion by 10 April. Following approval from the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, AGT International (Italy) and its local partner, Sodev Consult International Limited (Bangladesh), were contracted to execute the activities.
Under the digital framework, a database has already registered 50,018 livestock animals and 8,153 farms across 16 selected upazilas in 16 districts across eight divisions. This system records primary information alongside critical data regarding the health and production of the animals.
Project sources further revealed that the software developed for this purpose has the capacity to store information for approximately 10 billion livestock. The network’s scope has been extended to include all districts and upazilas within the project area, including city corporations and metropolitan zones.
