Direct flight operations between Dhaka and New York are unlikely to commence before 2028, according to Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) Chairman Air Vice Marshal Md Mostafa Mahmood Siddiq.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday following the inaugural ceremony of a workshop on Civil Aviation Master Plan held at a hotel in the capital, CAAB chairman said there is no realistic possibility of launching flights on this long-haul route before 2028.
He explained that further time is required to complete the necessary preparations involving modern aircraft, technical capabilities, and infrastructural readiness. Direct flights on this route cannot be initiated until these essential requirements are met.
During the event, Afroza Khanam Rita, minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism, informed attendees that it may take at least five years for new Boeing aircraft to be integrated into the Biman Bangladesh Airlines fleet. Consequently, the government is planning to lease aircraft from Airbus to maintain fleet capacity and ensure consistent passenger service.
In a related update, M Rashiduzzaman Millat, state minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism, announced that the government has set a target to inaugurate the highly anticipated third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on 16 December.
He expressed confidence that the Japanese firm tasked with the construction will complete the project within the scheduled timeframe.
The workshop further highlighted that the government is implementing various long-term strategies aimed at modernising the aviation sector, expanding international connectivity, and enhancing the overall quality of passenger services.
