Road communication between Sunamganj district headquarters and Tahirpur upazila has been severed as several roads were submerged following continuous rainfall and an onrush of water from the upstream hills.
The Anwarpur road in Tahirpur went under water on Sunday morning due to torrential rain and mountain runoff, snapping the direct road connection with the district town. Residents noted that the road frequently submerges whenever the volume of hill runoff increases.
According to the district Water Development Board (WDB), weather forecasts for Sunamganj, Sylhet, and the Meghalaya region of India indicate a high probability of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours.
If the rain continues, river levels across the district are expected to rise further, sparking fears of temporary flooding in low-lying areas.
Water levels in the Surma, Boulai, and Rakti rivers have already shown a significant upward trend. In the last 24 hours, the Surma River rose by 79cm, though it currently remains approximately 45cm below the danger mark.
Officials warned that persistent heavy rain over the next two days could push the water levels near or even above the danger level in some locations.
Mamun Howlader, executive officer of Sunamganj Water Development Board, said the river levels are rising due to ongoing rainfall in Cherrapunji, India. He cautioned that there is a risk of short-term flooding if the downpour persists.
Tahirpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mehedi Hasan Manik said that while the water current was relatively low in the morning, it intensified as the day progressed. He acknowledged that residents are facing difficulties in commuting but assured that the situation on the road would return to normal once the mountain runoff subsides.
