Dhaka court has directed the seizure of income tax records belonging to Lutful Tahmina Khan, the wife of former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, linked to a probe by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz passed the directive on Monday in response to a plea filed by ACC Deputy Director and Investigating Officer Md Zainal Abedin. The court’s bench assistant, Md Riaz Hossain, confirmed the issuance of the order.
According to the ACC application, Lutful Tahmina Khan is accused of acquiring and possessing Tk15.46 crore in assets beyond her known sources of income, which constitutes an offence under the ACC Act.
The application further states that former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan allegedly abused his position to assist her in committing the offence, making him liable under Section 109 of the Penal Code.
Additionally, the ACC has alleged that suspicious transactions totalling Tk43.77 crore were conducted by her via 10 separate bank accounts held under her name and under the names of entities where she has partial ownership.
These financial activities, according to the commission, are not commensurate with her declared sources of income and entail transfer and conversion of funds, thereby breaching Sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012.
The ACC informed the court that obtaining and examining her income tax returns and associated documents is crucial for carrying out a thorough investigation in the matter.
