A depression over the Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall and squally weather to parts of the country, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said.
In a warning issued Monday morning, the BMD said the depression is currently over the southwest Bangladesh–West Bengal coast and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal.
It is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to some areas of Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions over the next 48 hours from 8am.
The rainfall may cause temporary waterlogging in some areas and landslides in the hilly areas of Chattogram division.
The BMD said the depression is likely to move in a northwesterly direction. Under its influence, squally weather may affect maritime ports, the North Bay and adjoining coastal areas.
Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra ports have been advised to keep local cautionary signal No. 3 hoisted. Fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.
Meanwhile, rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty or squally winds of 45–60 kilometres per hour may affect Dhaka, Faridpur, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet from 10am to 6pm Monday.
River ports in these areas have been advised to hoist cautionary signal No. 1.
