Bangladesh reported two more dengue deaths and 671 new hospitalisations in the 24 hours to Wednesday morning, taking the death toll to 76 and the number of cases to 26,272 this year.
The data was released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in its daily dengue bulletin on Wednesday.
The latest fatalities involved patients aged between 6 and 10 and between 31 and 35.
Among the newly hospitalised patients, 430 were men and 241 were women.
Barishal recorded the highest number of new cases in the latest 24-hour period, with 133, followed by Khulna with 103, Rajshahi 92, Chattogram 83, Dhaka 70 and Mymensingh 35.
Rangpur reported six cases and Sylhet three.
One death each was reported in Khulna and Dhaka.
Of the 26,272 dengue patients hospitalised since January, 24,374 have recovered and been discharged, while 1,822 remain in hospitals, according to the DGHS.
A total of 627 patients were discharged in the latest 24-hour period.
Barishal has recorded the highest number of dengue cases this year, with 4,629, followed by Chattogram with 4,189.
Dhaka district, excluding the two city corporations, has reported 3,479 cases. Dhaka South City Corporation recorded 3,672 cases and Dhaka North 3,333.
Khulna has reported 3,599 cases, followed by Rajshahi with 1,262, Mymensingh 1,258, Rangpur 711 and Sylhet 139.
The monthly figures show a sharp rise in dengue infections during the monsoon.
The country recorded 353 cases in March, 2,907 in May; 9,206 in June and 10,962 in July. Another 1,081 cases were reported in the first 19 days of August.
Men account for 61.8 per cent of all dengue cases reported this year, while women account for 38.2 per cent.
Women, however, account for a larger share of deaths. Of the 76 fatalities, 57.9% were women and 42.1% were men.
DGHS data show that 41 deaths occurred among patients treated in hospitals within city corporation areas, while 34 deaths were reported from outside city corporation areas.
The figures highlight the continued spread of dengue during the peak monsoon period, with Barishal, Chattogram and areas of Dhaka among the worst affected.
